Did you ever notice that Nancy’s statement makes no sense at all? What does she think? That time magically reverts back if she just manages to defeat Freddy? Or does she really think that the whole past two weeks or so were all just one dream (which would have been the case in Wes Craven’s originally intended ending)? But in this case, why does she even bother to defeat Freddy? If she believes that everything is just a dream and that he isn’t real, then the question if she gets her mother and friends back has nothing to do with if she manages to defeat Freddy. If it was just a plain old nightmare, she would wake up either way. So, no matter how we look at it (or how Nancy looks at it), her sentence makes no sense: If Freddy is real, then her mother and friends won’t come back. If Freddy was just part of her imagination, her mother and friends would have never been dead in the first place and she wouldn’t even need to defeat Freddy.
