About Mario and Luigi’s colors in the middle part of the comic: In “Super Mario Bros. 1”, Mario was shown with red pants and a brown shirt, but all artworks displayed him with a blue shirt. So, while in “Donkey Kong” his sprite is shown with a blue shirt and blue hair, I think this time they wanted to give the hair a more realistic color. And because an NES sprite can only consist of three colors, the shirt had to have the same color as the hair. That means: In “Super Mario Bros. 1” the brown shirt stands for a blue one. Now, in “Super Mario Bros. 3”, the artwork colors are reversed: Blue pants and red shirt instead of red pants and blue shirt. So, when Mario from the time of “Super Mario Bros. 3” is drawn in the graphic style of “Super Mario Bros. 1”, he has to get brown pants that stand for blue pants plus a red shirt. And the shoes always have the color that the pants don’t have to distinguish the shoes from the pants. That’s the reason I gave present Mario and Luigi the colors that they have in the hypothetical flashback scene.
For people who don’t know it: The king is an actual character from the game. I didn’t edit him myself.
